Simplifying Things: Don’t Eat.
What NOT to eat.
For clarification, these are not rules. You are not banning yourself from enjoying treats, and we’re not saying that we never eat these things — we’ll have our cake and eat it too. BUT if you’re looking to feel 100% amazing all the time or hit some kind of health or fitness goal, steer clear of the garbage outlined below.
Rule of Thumb: if you can’t pronounce it, you shouldn’t eat it.
Pro Tip: 80/20 or 90/10 — i.e. 80% of the time you’re a health-rockstar; 20% of the time you’re a normal, sugar eating, booze drinking rock star.
BAD OILS
Anything hydrogenated
Palm
Canola
Sunflower
Safflower
Vegetable Oil
Grape Seed Oil
Any Seed Oil, for that matter
Brands to look for: Chosen Foods
SOY: there are soy free options on the market
Teriyaki Sauce
Soy Sauce
Miso
Ponzu
Why? Soy is one of the #1 most genetically modified foods on the planet, which means, it causes inflammation, i.e. disease.
EMPTY CALORIES
chips, low quality bread, candy, baked goods, mayo
If you’re going to eat mayo or sauces, make sure they don’t have bad oils - Primal Kitchen has good sauces + mayo, and there is a brand at Costco that makes their stuff with Avocado oil — look at the labels
Sugar (yes, you can and should be eating fruit. If your doctor tells you that fruit isn’t good for you, find another doctor.)
DAIRY
Cheese, yogurt, cream, sour cream, ice cream… dairy is glue for fat to your body and causes inflammation
Look for substitute cheeses: Follow Your Heart + Daiya make great non-dairy cheese
If you’re dying for ice cream, Ben & Jerry’s makes a dairy free that’s really good, but loaded with sugar
PROCESSED MEAT
Deli Meat: if you’re going to eat deli meat, make sure it’s pasture-raised, non-nitrate… get boars head, non-nitrate meat is fine
Bacon, yeah, even turkey bacon is loaded with carcinogens
Anything that doesn’t look close to its original form or has been cured
It tastes better fresh anyway, right?
